Competitor analysis is the process of looking at your industry and seeing who the big players are and what their strengths and weaknesses are.  It helps you to develop a strategy to win the battle for the top position in the search results page.  It is the beginning of any marketing campaign and if you want to take that coveted first place you need to understand what it takes to get there.  Competitor analysis is not as difficult as it sound there are plenty of tools out there to help you.  This is how you do a competitor analysis.

Who are your competitors?

The first thing you need to do is to find out exactly who your competitors are.  If you don’t already know who you are up against then a simple Google search will tell you.  Who is sitting at the top of the results page for the keywords you want to rank?

How You Do a Competitor Analysis

Visit their site

You will want to take a tour of their website and analyze it, what features do they have.  Where are the better than you?  You need to get an idea of why they are ranking so high in order for you to compete and eventually knock them from that first position.  Takes what is working for them and make it better on your own site.

Spy on their keywords

If you want to beat the competition then knowing all the terms they are ranking for is half the battle.  There are tools like SEMRush that can help you do just that.  These tools can also give you an idea of how difficult it will be to rank for certain terms.

Evaluate their backlinks

Backlinks are one of the most important tools to help you rank your website, so you want to take a look at the backlinks your competitor is using and see if you can secure a backlink from the same sources.  Again there are tools like SEMRush and aHREFs that can help you find where your competitor is getting their links from.

Social profiles

You can expect any competitor to have social profiles in this day and age but what you need to know is how they are using them.  Are they engaged with their audience, do they post frequently and what type of content are they posting?  Social media is one of the easiest ways you can improve your online strategy that drives traffic to your website.

Once you have an understanding of what it takes to grab that first position then it is a whole lot easier to make it happen, the first step is figuring how your competitors did it.
